The relationship between architect and builder is very symbiotic. Architects would never recommend a subpar builder and builders would never work with an architect not worth his salt. It is for that reason. Both architect and builder must have a solid track record.
In many instances, a builder will have such a good reputation that the customer will select them before finding the architect. Whether the builder recommends the architect or the other way around, you will work hand-in-hand.
